Stromboli Sandwich
Ingredients
- 1 ½ lbs ground beef
- 1 small onion chopped
- 1 small green pepper chopped
- ⅓ cup sliced mushrooms drained (half of a 4-ounce can)
- 12 ounces tomato paste
- ¼ cup water
- ¼ cup parmesan cheese grated
- ½ tsp dried oregano
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ¼ tsp crushed rosemary
- ¼ tsp dried sage
- salt and pepper to taste
- 4 (8 ounce) loaves french bread
- 16 oz mozzarella cheese sliced
Instructions
- Brown ground beef Drain. Add onion, green pepper and mushrooms. Cook 5 minutes.
- Stir in tomato paste, water, parmesan cheese, oregano, garlic powder, rosemary and sage. Simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. (Filling can be made ahead and stored in refrigerator or freezer.)
- Cut bread lengthwise leaving about 2/3 of bread below cut. Scoop out center. (Leftover bread can be used to make bread crumbs.)
- Line shell with mozzarella. Fill with heated meat mixture. Cover with more mozzarella and replace top of bread.
- Wrap securely in foil. Bake in preheated 400° oven 6-10 minutes.
- Using serrated knife, cut into 2-inch slices.
