Crust
- 2 cups flour
- 1 tsp salt
- ⅔ cup shortening
- 4 Tbs water
Syrup
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 cups water
- 3 Tbs butter
- ¼ tsp cinnamon
Boil syrup ingredients together for 3 minutes, set aside. Combine pastry ingredients. Roll out pastry about 1/8-inch thick and cut into 7-inch squares. Pare and core a medium-sized, tart apple for each dumpling. Place each apple on a square of pastry and fill core cavity with sugar, dash of cinnamon and a dot of butter. Bring opposite points of pastry up over the apple, overlap, moisten and seal.
Place dumplings in glass baking dish and pour hot syrup around them. Bake uncovered in 425° oven for 40-45 minutes.
Serve warm with the syrup and whipped cream.
